Scope and Content Ness Viaduct, Inverness, Inverness-shire This viaduct was built for the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway, and designed by Joseph Mitchell. It had five flat segmental main spans of 22.2m, with one plate-girder span on the west side and a plate girder and four short masonry arches on the east. This view shows the viaduct from the north east. The quality of the ashlar masonry is evident. This massive structure was destroyed by floods and subsequently the river spans were replaced by three steel box-girder spans, the central one longer than its neighbours.
