Description Inverness, Anderson Street, Thornbush Slipway and Shipyard General view of slips from Thornbush Quay (from NW), works buildings in background

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440421

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Thornbush Slipway, Inverness, Inverness-shire This small shipbuilding and repair yard was constructed to build and overhaul steam drifters and trawlers operating in the Moray Firth fishing industry. This view shows the patent slipway, use for removing vessels from the water for repair. These could then be 'side-slipped' as seen here to free the slipway for other vessels. The main workshop of the yard is the corrugated-iron building beyond the slip. This was the only facility of the kind west of Lossiemouth, and was bigger than most.
