SC 440401

Description Garve, Wooden Bridge General view looking E

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440401

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Wooden bridge, Garve, Ross and Cromarty This is an eight-span structure, with wooden piles supporting cross beams. These are linked by longitudinal beams, carrying the plank deck. The parapets are in the form of X trusses, and appear to be load-bearing, with side braces to the cross beams. This view shows the bridge from the south west, illustrating the strong, simple design. Bridges of this type were popular in the Highlands in the late 19th century, when timber was readily available in the large sections required. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
