Ardgay, Ice-House General view from SE

SC 440379

Description Ardgay, Ice-House General view from SE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440379

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ice house, Ardgay, Ross and Cromarty This is an unusually large commercial ice house, built to store locally- collected or imported ice to be used for packing salmon for shipment to the London market. This view shows the ice house from the north west. The manner in which the vaulted chamber is set into a bank, and covered with earth, is evident. The retaining walls for the earth cover are unusual. This ice house supplied ice to the salmon fishery at the south end of the Bonar Bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
