Scope and Content The Mound, Sutherland This massive embankment was built across Loch Fleet by Thomas Telford mainly to carry his great road north to Wick and Thurso, but also to allow land round Loch Fleet to be reclaimed. Flap sluices allowed fresh water to leave but kept salt water out. This view shows the sluices from the Loch Fleet side. Telford provided four sluices, and Joseph Mitchell added two more in 1837. The main road diversion seen on the right of this view has since been superseded by one on a more generous curve. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
