Scope and Content John O'Groat Laundry, Wick, Caithness This is a good example of a commercial laundry of the type that became popular at the turn of the century. In laundries like this, household linen and clothing could be washed mechanically, for a small fee. This view shows the laundry from the street. The single-storey brick workshops are typical of the building type, as is the square-section brick chimney stack. Laundries like this became less popular with the availability of cheap domestic washing machines. The survivors wash industrial clothing and hotel ware. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
