Scope and Content Signal tower, ferry pier, Tongue, Sutherland This is the eastern end of the ferry across the Kyle of Tongue, probably formally instituted c1830 as part of the coast road from Thurso to Durness. This view shows the lookout tower at the Tongue end. The tower fell out of use long before the ferry was abandoned in 1971 when the Kyle of Tongue was bridged. There was a corresponding tower at the other end of the ferry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
