Description Baligill, limekilns View of N kiln and retaining wall, looking N

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440298

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Strathy Limeworks, Sutherland This is one of a series of limeworks situated along the north coast of Sutherland, and working a limestone seam which outcrops there. These works produced lime primarily for agricultural improvement. This view shows the best-preserved of the three kilns on this site. It was a two-draw kiln on a circular plan. The other two kilns were also part-circular in plan, but were linked to form a bank. Their remains are now fragmentary. The masonry of this kiln, which appears to be of drystone construction, is unusually fine, and it appears to survive almost to its full height. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
