Scope and Content Baligill Limeworks, Sutherland This is one of a series of limeworks situated along the north coast of Sutherland, and working a limestone seam which outcrops there. These works produced lime primarily for agricultural improvement. This view shows the central draw arch of the older of the two kilns at this works, built c1830. It was a three-draw kiln on a circular plan. At some time after its construction massive curved buttresses seen here were added between the drawholes. The masonry of the upper part of this kiln is unusually thin, which is probably why the buttresses were necessary. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
