Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440287

Scope and Content Baligill Limeworks, Sutherland This is one of a series of limeworks situated along the north coast of Sutherland, and working a limestone seam which outcrops there. These works produced lime primarily for agricultural improvement. This view shows the more recent of the two kilns at this works, built c1870. It was a three-draw kiln, with unusually narrow draw arches. The kiln has lost its top section but is otherwise well-preserved. The quality of the masonry in this kiln is unusually high, and is in marked contrast to that of the earlier kiln at this works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
