Scope and Content The imposing landmark of the Roman Catholic Church on Sanday The church was designed by William Frame and was built by the Marchioness of Bute as a memorial to her father, Lord Howard of Glossop. It is dedicated to St Edward the Confessor. The church was closed in 1963 and is now deconsecrated. View of the church from the south looking across Canna Harbour. The church is constructed of coursed whinstone with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. It has a semicircular chancel at its east end and a tower with belfry at its south-west corner. A survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission to record all the archaeological sites and monuments and the landscape within which they lie. This landscape is published as RCAHMS Broadsheet 5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
