Scope and Content View from west of St Mary's Parish Church tower, Monymusk, Aberdeenshire In 1170 Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, established a community of Augustinian canons at Monymusk. The present church, although mainly modern, incorporates two principal features of the Augustinian priory-church: the west tower and the chancel arch. The west tower stands 15.5m high (originally 18m) and is built of coursed granite with sandstone dressings. The round-arched doorway is made of sandstone and has hood-moulding above it. The tower was originally finished with an open parapet. The church, a typical mid-12th-century parish church, is built in a Romanesque style. This term is used to describe buildings of this date in Europe which are characterised by the use of round arches, and thick walls to support the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
