Scope and Content Chambered cairn, Allt nam Ban, Clyne, Sutherland The cairn is 100m from the E shore of Loch Brora, and close to the S bank of Allt nam Ban. The cairn is oval, measuring about 17m E to W by about 14m transversely, and has been severely robbed. View towards Loch Brora, facing W. Only the inner part of the passage survives, much of the S side of the cairn having been removed for road metal in the early part of the 20th century. Three orthostats and the W lintel are visible. Chambered cairns belong to the Neolithic, the period of the first farming peoples of Scotland, and were the burial places for local communities. The earliest tombs were built around 4000 BC, but the building tradition lasted until at least 2500 BC. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
