Scope and Content Sandside Harbour, Caithness This harbour was built by a local landowner, Major Innes, as a fishing station. It consists of two piers with angled heads enclosing a basin with a quayed landward side and a slipway. This view shows the harbour from the north west, with the south pier in the background. The masonry in the foreground is the landward end of the north pier, showing storm damage. This harbour was built when there was government encouragement for the herring fisheries of northern Scotland. Latterly it functioned as a salmon and creel fishing station.
