Scotscalder Station, Snow Blower View from SW

SC 438207

Description Scotscalder Station, Snow Blower View from SW

Date 16/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 438207

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Snow blower near Scotscalder Station, Caithness This device was installed where the railway is in a shallow cutting. In snowy conditions loose snow blowing across the flat and treeless landscape was liable to fill the cutting. These corrugated-iron-clad frames channelled wind to deter drifting. This view shows the so-called snow blower from the south west. The uprights are old rails, the diagonals timber. When winters were more severe the Sutherland and Caithness Railway was often blocked by snow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
