Scope and Content Flagstone quarry, Spittal, Caithness There were extensive flagstone quarries in the Spittal area, supplying paving slabs to both Scottish and English markets. They were worked by excavating down from low-lying ground, so flooded when working was abandoned. This view shows a flooded section of quarry. The small depth of soil above the surface of the stone strata is evident. The ease with which the Caithness flagstones could be split into regular slabs, and the non-slip surfaces which resulted made them very popular for surfacing street pavements, courtyards, kitchen floors etc in the 19th century.
