Achingale Mill View from SE showing small waterwheel

SC 438188

Description Achingale Mill View from SE showing small waterwheel

Date 16/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 438188

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Achingale Mill, Watten, Caithness This is a large corn mill, on an L-plan. It has a wood and iron overshot waterwheel, 1.37 by 3.66m driving the stones, and a small single-ring wheel. 0.28 by 1.22m, which drove a conveyor feeding husks to the kiln fire. This view shows the small auxiliary wheel. This seems to be an addition to the mill as originally designed. This is one of the finest late water-powered corn mills in Scotland. The use of a small auxiliary wheel to drive a conveyor is a very unusual feature. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
