Scope and Content Pier, Phillips's Harbour, Harrow, Caithness Phillips's Harbour seems to have been built as a fishing station for herring and salmon. This pier proved shelter for the small open boats used in the Pentland Firth fishing, and also served the larger craft which took salmon and cured herring to market. This view shows the pier, well constructed of flagstone slabs, with its angled head now ruinous. The cobbled area in the foreground was probably intended for herring curing. This pier was associated with a group of buildings built to service the salmon-fishing trade. These included an ice house and a boiling shed, both to ensure that salmon reached the London market in the best possible condition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
