Scope and Content Millbank Foundry, Thurso, Caithness This mill is part of an early industrial complex on a lade from the river Thurso. The foundry is downstream from the mill, and consists of a two-storey section on an L-plan, and a long single storey range with a short, taller building at the north end. This view shows the foundry from the south east, with the end of the two-storey section on the left. The single-storey section is now used for structural engineering. It is not clear how this complex worked, and in particular where the iron was melted. The concern was apparently a general engineering one, and not just a foundry, so there would have been a smithy and machine shops, probably in these buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
