Castletown, Mill View from NW

SC 438056

Description Castletown, Mill View from NW

Date 5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 438056

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Corn mill, Castletown, Caithness This is a very large double mill, on a T-plan, the down-stroke of the T being a long three-storey granary. The cross-stroke has at its centre a large kiln. The flanking wings are three-storey water-powered mills. One of the wheels was about 1.83m by 4.88m. This view shows the mill from the north west, with the central kiln between the two covered hoists. The only other double mill known at the time of writing is the Ayre Mill in Kirkwall, Orkney, where the mills are in the middle, with flanking kilns. There, as here, all the machinery has been removed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
