Scope and Content Gatehead Signal Box and level crossing, Gatehead, Ayrshire Gatehead was a wayside station on the Kilmarnock & Troon line of the Glasgow & South Western Railway. This level crossing was at the west end of the station. The signal box was of a G&SWR standard type. This view shows the east side of the level crossing, with gates of a type then standard. The timber construction and the bracketed walkway below the windows are characteristic G&SWR features. Since this photograph was taken the signal box and gates have been removed and replaced by automatic barriers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
