Scope and Content Saltcoats Station, Saltcoats, Ayrshire This station was opened in 1840. But was rebuilt by the Glasgow & South Western Railway in 1894 in response to the opening of a new station by the Caledonian Railway on its Lanarkshire & Ayrshire line. This view shows lattice-girder footbridge linking the platforms, with the Glasgow-bound platform building visible through it. Footbridges of this type were relatively novel in the early 1890s. Saltcoats developed into a popular sea-side resort from the 1840s, and this therefore was an important station, handling large numbers of day trippers in the season.
