Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Saltcoats Station, Saltcoats, Ayrshire This station was opened in 1840. But was rebuilt by the Glasgow & South Western Railway in 1894 in response to the opening of a new station by the Caledonian Railway on its Lanarkshire & Ayrshire line. This view shows the street frontage of the Ardrossan-bound platform building, which housed the main station offices. Saltcoats developed into a popular sea-side resort from the 1840s, and this therefore was an important station, handling large numbers of day trippers in the season.
