Scope and Content West Kilbride Railway Station, West Kilbride, Ayrshire West Kilbride station was opened in 1878 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway as a wayside station on its line to Fairlie Pier. The original basic station building was replaced c1900 by this building, probably designed by James Miller. This view shows the railway side of this two-platform station. The main station building is on the left, and is linked to the Glasgow-bound platform by a covered footbridge, a prestigious innovation. West Kilbride developed as a middle class dormitory village for Glasgow and industrial Ayrshire, hence the fashionable new building. When this line was electrified in the 1980s it was singled and the footbridge removed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
