Scope and Content Lime kiln, Dubrach, Glen Dee, Mar Lodge Estate, Aberdeenshire Townships are clusters of dwelling houses and barns, enclosures, kilns and cultivation rigs. They were the homes of people practising mixed farming, both cultivation of crops and stock-rearing, mostly cattle. The lime kiln is a D-shaped stone structure with its flue opening towards the River Dee. On the terrace behind, cultivation rigs are visible, and these were probably dressed with the lime from the kiln to make the soil more fertile. Mar Lodge estate was part of the medieval Earldom of Mar. The Forest of Mar became a hunting reserve in medieval times and was revived as such in the 19th century, after a period of sheep-farming in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
