Scope and Content Finlayson, Bousfield's linen thread mills, Johnstone, Renfrewshire Johnstone has the first cotton-spinning mill in mainland south-west Scotland, and developed as a major centre of the industry in Scotland. This mill complex began spinning cotton but was adapted and extended to make linen thread. This view shows the end of the cotton mill in the middle, with the larger linen thread mill on the right. The red and white brick buildings and tall brick chimney were also part of the complex. Scottish cotton-masters generally did not choose to compete with those in Lancashire, allowing their initial investment to run down, and applying their capital to other, more profitable industries, including the making of linen thread.
