Description Ballinluig Viaduct General view along main spans

Date 5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435526

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ballinluig Viaduct, Ballinluig, Perthshire This viaduct was built as part of The Highland Railway's branch from Ballinluig to Aberfeldy. It was designed by Joseph Mitchell, and the ironwork was supplied by Sir William Fairbairn & Co. The branch closed in 1965 and the viaduct became a road bridge. This view shows the viaduct deck after conversion for road use. The piers supporting the tie beams have cast iron cladding, as do the dies at the end of the approach spans. The main spans of this viaduct are of the lattice or Town truss type. The viaduct was demolished in about 1980 when it was replaced by a purpose-built composite concrete and steel road bridge.
