Scope and Content Tollhouse, Dunkeld Bridge, Dunkeld, Perthshire This bridge was designed by Thomas Telford to replace a dangerous ferry over the Tay which was an important link in the communications between central Scotland and the Highlands. This tollhouse collected "pontages' to pay for the bridge. This view shows the front of the tollhouse, which is at the south end of the bridge. It has a deep basement. The quality of construction is appropriate to the importance of the bridge. The bridge itself is designed in the grand manner, with castellated refuges and mock arrow-slits, reflecting the taste of the then Duke of Atholl, who contributed to the cost of the bridge, and on whose estate it was situated.
