Scope and Content Keiss Harbour, Caithness Keiss Harbour is an outstanding example of early 19th century fishing harbour design. It consists of an S-plan north pier, with a landing area at its base, a U-plan south pier, and a stub pier projecting towards the end of the south pier. This view shows the west side of the inner harbour, with inshore fishing vessels. Note the massive construction of the quay. The effect of this layout is to form an entrance basin with a side opening into the inner harbour. The entrance basin has a shelving end, with a massive wall at its head. These absorb most of the energy in the waves entering the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
