Scope and Content Keiss Harbour, Caithness Keiss Harbour is an outstanding example of early 19th century fishing harbour design. It consists of an S-plan north pier, with a landing area at its base, a U-plan south pier, and a stub pier projecting towards the end of the south pier. This view shows the ice house which provided ice to preserve salmon, caught locally, while en route to the London market. This ice house has the usual vaulted chamber set into the cliff, but also an antechamber to restrict access of warm air. The effect of this layout is to form an entrance basin with a side opening into the inner harbour. The entrance basin has a shelving end, with a massive wall at its head. These absorb most of the energy in the waves entering the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
