Scope and Content Curing houses, Lower Pultneytown, Wick, Caithness The construction of Pultneytown harbour began in 1824, to designs by Thomas Telford, on the south side of Wick. At the same time the new town of Pultneytown was laid out, with commerce in the lower, and houses and churches in the upper town. This view shows the courtyard of a herring-curing yard in one of the streets in Lower Pultneytown. Such premises had cooperages for making barrels, stores for empty barrels and salt, and warehousing for full barrels awaiting shipment. The harbour of Pultneytown was one of the most important herring fishing centres in the world for many years in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Herring cured there played an important role in the diet of many people in eastern Europe. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
