Sarclet, Harbour General view from NE

SC 435439

Description Sarclet, Harbour General view from NE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435439

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sarclet Haven, Caithness This is a natural inlet in the cliffs south of Wick, which provided a base for open fishing boats. It was improved in the early 19th century by building quays along the sides, and breakwaters, though these have not survived. This view shows the haven from above, with the roofless ruin of a curing house on the right. Remains of quay walls can also be seen, and the scatter of stones from a breakwater destroyed by the waves. This was, despite it appearance, a very important centre for herring fishing in the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
