Scope and Content Lybster Harbour, Caithness This is a large and complex harbour for the area, laid out in 1849 and rebuilt at the expense of the Duke of Portland in 1882. More recently part of the quay walls have been sheet piled with concrete tops. This view shows the lighthouse which marks the harbour entrance. It probably dates from the 1882 works, and is one of the most attractive of the Scottish harbour lights. This harbour was an important centre for herring fishing, and there were several curing houses of which two survive intact. Another building, now roofless, houses a small smokehouse for kippering herring. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
