Dunbeath, Balcladich, Gear Store View from E

Description Dunbeath, Balcladich, Gear Store View from E

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435405

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Fishing station, Balcladich, Dunbeath, Caithness This is a beach fishing station, though the fishers also used the immediately adjacent harbour at Portormin. The station consisted of about a dozen single-storey cottages, now ruined, two or three two-storey houses and a long curing-house/bothy range. This view shows the curing-house/bothy range, with dwelling house at the far end. Though latterly apparently used by salmon fishers it seems likely that the building was built as a curing house for the herring fishing trade. By the time this photograph was taken beach fishing for salmon had ended here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
