Ousdale, Bridge General view from E

SC 435394

Description Ousdale, Bridge General view from E

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435394

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bridge over Ousdale Burn, Caithness This bridge and its associated length of bypassed road are part of Thomas Telford's great road from Inverness to Wick and Thurso. The tall semicircular arch and massive abutments reflect the abundance and properties of Caithness flagstone. This view shows the bridge from the east. Note the buttresses, which may have been added when the high walls of the abutments showed signs of weakness. In concentrating attention on Telford's larger bridges one tends to forget the very large number of smaller bridges for which he was responsible - over 1000 in the Highlands and Islands alone.
