Description Helmsdale, Ice-House General view from E

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435386

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ice house by old Helmsdale Bridge, Helmsdale, Sutherland This is an unusually large commercial ice house, built in connection with the salmon fishing industry, It consists of a rectangular vaulted chamber set into a bank and covered with earth to insulate it. This view shows the ice house from the east, with its curved front wall. From its relationship to the bridge it is likely that it was built after the bridge. Such ice houses were built to store local or imported ice until it was required for packing salmon for shipment in fast sailing vessels to the London market. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
