Scope and Content Brora Harbour, Sutherland This harbour was built by the Sutherland Estate in c1814 as part of their programme of estate improvement. It was designed by William Hughes, for shipping coal mined in the Estate colliery at Brora. An ice house was added in c1820. This view shows the harbour from the north bank of the river Brora. The inner basin can be seen behind the training wall of loose stones, which protects it from the river in time of spate. The harbour is now used by inshore fishing craft and pleasure boats.
