Scope and Content Dam, Loch Shin, near Lairg, Sutherland This dam was built to raise the level of Loch Shin to provide water for generating hydro-electric power. It is a reinforced concrete structure. This view shows the dam from the east. It is designed to function as a weir in flood conditions, with water flowing over the lower sections of the structure. The hydro-electric scheme of which this is a part brought electric power to the far north of Scotland for the first time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
