Description The Mound View from W

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435304

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The Mound, Sutherland This is a massive embankment across the mouth of Loch Fleet, which was designed both to carry Thomas Telford's great road from Inverness to the north and also to reclaim land round Loch Fleet. This view shows the embankment from the south-west. At its northern there is a set of six arches, fitted with outward-opening flaps which allow fresh water to flow out, but prevent salt water from flowing into Loch Fleet. This is one of Telford's largest works. Joseph Mitchell added two arches to Telford's four, but to Telford's design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
