Scope and Content High Mills, Tain, Ross and Cromarty These mills were built for woollen manufacture at a time when many country districts had their own mills to process locally-grown wool. There were two small two-storey mills sited one above the other, and both with overshot waterwheels. This view shows the two mills, with the remains of the two water wheels. The mills had long been out of use. Note that the upper mill is smaller than the lower, suggesting a division of process between them. These mills were sited where the fall of water was large enough for the water used in one wheel to power the lower one, a rare occurrence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
