Scope and Content Dalmore Distillery, Alness, Ross and Cromarty This distillery is said to have been founded in 1839, but most of the buildings on the site date from after 1878, when it was acquired by Mackenzie Bros., who developed it on a large scale. This view shows a vertical steam engine in the distillery, by James Milne of Edinburgh, which drove the malt mill. It was retained in situ after the mill was electrified. Dalmore was one of the few malt whiskies to be sold extensively as a single whisky before the 1970s. The distillery owners also had a noted herd of Aberdeen-Angus beef cattle, who were fed on the draff produced by the distillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
