Cromarty, George Street, Lighthouse and Keeper's cottage View looking NW showing front of cottage and lighthouse base

SC 435128

Description Cromarty, George Street, Lighthouse and Keeper's cottage View looking NW showing front of cottage and lighthouse base

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435128

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cromarty Lighthouse, Ross and Cromarty This lighthouse was designed by Alan Stevenson. It is a short tapering circular-section tower, on a semicircular base, with continuous corbelling supporting a gallery with plain cast-iron railing. The domed lantern has original rectangular panes. This view shows the Egyptian-inspired keepers' houses, characteristic of the work of Alan Stevenson, with the base of the lighthouse on the right. This lighthouse is very similar to that at Chanonry Point, on the other side of the Black Isle, built at the same time. The houses are now used by marine biologists investigating the Moray Firth dolphins. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
