Scope and Content Clachnaharry Signal Box, near Inverness The first bridge on this site was built of wrought iron for the Inverness & Ross-shire Railway, and was designed by Joseph Mitchell. In 1909 it was renewed in steel to the same design. This signal box was built to control the bridge and its signals. This view shows the box from the north east. It is of typical Highland Railway design, with a vertically-boarded timber superstructure on a brick base. Until 1973 there were signals for canal as well as railway traffic. The bridge was originally turned by hand, but it is now electrically operated from this box. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
