Scope and Content Workshop Lock, Caledonian Canal, Clachnaharry, near Inverness The maintenance workshops of the Caledonian Canal were built at Clachnaharry, beside the second lock from the east. There were both wood and iron-working shops here. This view shows the top gates of the lock. In the foreground is the head of one of the vertical windlasses that opened and closed the lock gates until the 1960s. Wooden poles were placed in the sockets and pushed round by the lock-keepers. Behind the gates is a slat-sided timber store, which was later destroyed by fire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
