Date 12/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Muirtown Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness This staircase of four locks raises the level of the canal from that of Muirtown Basin almost to that of Loch Ness. The engineer was Thomas Telford. In a lock staircase, the bottom gates of one lock are also the top gates of the next one down. This view shows the locks from the west. The buildings on the extreme right are part of Glen Mhor Distillery. The enormous scale of the canal is clearly visible. Since this photograph was taken the distillery buildings have been demolished.
