Scope and Content Muirtown Basin, Caledonian Canal, Inverness This basin was built as a sheltered holding basin at the landward end of the first reach of the canal, with quays on both sides. The engineer was Thomas Telford. This view shows the basin from the south west. The buildings on the right are part of Glen Albyn Distillery. The large vessel left of centre is the gate lifter, designed to lift the large lock gates on the canal for repair or replacement. Since this photograph was taken the distillery buildings have been demolished and the gate lifter has been scrapped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
