Scope and Content White Bridge, Clephanton, Nairnshire This is a two-span masonry bridge, with segmental arches of unequal size, and triangular cutwaters. It was built as part of a military road to Fort George. This view shows the bridge from the south west. Note the rubble construction, with the courses of the masonry radiating from the arch ring, an unusual feature. The construction of Fort George was intended to deter French invasion of the Highlands, and a new system of military roads was necessary to allow troops to be deployed rapidly.
