Dalwhinnie Distillery View from SE

SC 434894

Description Dalwhinnie Distillery View from SE

Date 5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 434894

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dalwhinnie Distillery, Inverness-shire This distillery was built by the Strathspey Distillery Co Ltd. It was the first Scotch Whisky distillery to be owned in the United States, in 1905. Badly damaged by fire in 1934, it reopened in 1938. This view shows the distillery from the east, with the former maltings on the left, and the stillhouse on the right. The tank on columns in front of the stillhouse contained the coiled copper pipes (worms) for condensing the vapours from the stills. After this photograph was taken the worms were replaced by condensers, but they have since been reinstated, with new wooden worm tubs in the traditional style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
