Scope and Content Glenpatrick Carpet Works, Elderslie, Renfrewshire This works was founded as a paper mill in 1815, and converted into a carpet works in about 1860. The carpets made here by Stoddarts earned a world reputation for quality. This view shows the workshops, single-storey north-light weaving sheds to the rear of the office block. These housed Axminster carpet looms and ancillary equipment. Carpet weaving was an important west of Scotland industry until cheap, if less durable, alternatives came on the market in the 1960s and 70s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
