Scope and Content Tilt Viaduct, Blair Atholl, Perthshire This viaduct was opened by the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway in 1863. It was designed by Joseph Mitchell, and the ironwork was made by Sir William Fairbairn & Co. Stiffening was added in the 1920s by the LMS railway. This view shows the viaduct from the north west. The span is of the lattice or Town truss type, and the steel reinforcement installed by the LMS is obvious. The castellated masonry was built to please the Duke of Atholl. The strengthening of this viaduct and of the Dalguise Viaduct, further south, allowed heavier and more powerful locomotives to be used on the line to Inverness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
